The fight was brutal as the dragons trashed and ripped at each other to win back their territory. After years of fighting and clawing at each other, they grew frustrated. Their strength was evenly matched and neither could win. The dragons both admitted defeat and crawled back to caves in their respective valleys and are still crying over being defeated. The dragons’ hot tears are the source of the hot springs at in the Elwha and Sol Duc Valleys.

Espero que el Otoño os haya recibido bien. Os escribo esta nota para anunciaros la celebración de un concierto muy especial para mi, y que espero también lo sea para vosotros. El domingo 24 de Octubre, por la tarde (19:30), en el Casino Antiguo de Castellón, haremos de anfitriones de las actuaciones de Heather Woods Broderick (Portland/Copenhague) y Nils Frahm (Berlín), a quienes les estoy realmente agradecido por hacer lo posible por venir a Castellón (única fecha en España).

Para mí será especial no sólo por tocar junto a dos artistas a los que admiro profundamente, sino también porque dicho concierto será el último (al menos durante un tiempo) que haré con la banda que me ha acompañado durante más de año y medio presentando las canciones de “La Siembra, la Espera y la Cosecha” (Hush Records/Green UFOs, 2010).  La actuación de Castellón será la última de una pequeña gira que hacemos en España y Portugal en Octubre.

Respecto a Heather y Nils, es mucho lo que me gustaría contaros para animaros a venir al concierto, especialmente a los que vivís en Castellón, pero en esto de la música ya sabéis que los sonidos mandan más que las palabras, así que os invito a que descubráis su música y sus trayectorias en caso de que os sean desconocidas; creo que son absolutamente recomendables.

Si os diré que conocí a Heather (hermana de Peter Broderick) en Portland, hace unos cuatro años más o menos, y que recuerdo perfectamente el primer día que me tocó sus canciones, en el salón de su casa.  Sus dos gatos (ariscos como pocos), aparecieron y se durmieron a sus pies (sólo se dejaban acariciar cuando Heather tocaba). Heather ha sido parte de proyectos tan respetados como Loch Lomond o Horse Feathers, y en la actualidad es parte de uno de mis grupos favoritos, los daneses Efterklang, con quienes actuó en el FIB 2010.

Respecto a Nils (al que conocí a través de Peter y Heather), el otro día me contaba por e-mail que hizo un concierto sorpresa en Londres, organizado por su sello (Erased Tapes) y en tres horas agotó las entradas. Lo repitieron tres días seguidos. Es poco frecuente que un pianista joven (nació en 1982), y que se dedica básicamente a eso, a tocar el piano, congregue a tanta gente, especialmente a tanta gente joven.

A pesar de la generosa amabilidad de Heather, Nils, y del Casino Antiguo por permitirnos utilizar su espacio con piano, éste es un concierto completamente autogestionado, lo cual implica que no contamos con ningún tipo de financiación. Como os podéis imaginar, los conciertos requieren de una pequeña infraestructura (equipo de sonido, etc.). El Casino Antiguo, como entidad sin ánimo de lucro, no permite la venta de entradas en su propio edificio, pero no se opone a la venta de discos de los grupos que actúan allí. Así que hemos preparado (con la ayuda de Hush Records) una edición especial  limitada de 100 copias de un disco que sólo se había editado en formato digital (Debutantes e.p.), el cual incluye además una actuación en directo grabada en la Sala de Cámara del Auditori de Castellón, el 2 de Mayo de este año. El precio del CD/entrada será de 10 euros.

Spain to Oregon… then Oregon to Spain then back and all over again… that
sounds like Rauelsson, doesn’t it?. After an entire year in Oregon, Rauelsson
is back in Spain until the Summer. He seems to not have had enough of Portland
as he is about to embark on a tour all over the Spanish peninsula that is somehow
full of Portland. He will be touring Spain with the same Portland band that
played with him here in Oregon and on his West Coast shows; Laurel Simmons
(MayMay; who will open for some shows in Spain), Nicholas Marshall
(Sabertooth), Matt Berger (Musee Mecanique, Laura Gibson, etc.), Anna Schott
and Dave Leavitt. The tour starts in Barcelona opening for She & Him, the
“side” project of monster-of-folk and Portlander M. Ward with actress Zooey
Deschanel. Then they head to Valencia, where they play with HUSH queen Laura
Gibson, who is back in Europe on an extensive tour with Port O’Brien. Then
north to the medieval city of Girona, then Madrid for a Radio-3
interview/session on Julio Ruiz’s Disco Grande (a session that Rauelsson shares
with Laura Gibson). Then a bit south to Albacete, then back to Madrid, then off
to the Mediterranean coast to play in Alicante and from there to finish on a
homecoming show at the Auditori of Castellón….oh! and before the tour
supporting “La Siembra” starts Rauelsson will be performing live the score that
he wrote for the documentary “From River to Sea”, directed by Susan Fink, as
part of the Cinemascore Festival in Benicassim, Spain.

I hope this new year is finding you all well. Six more weeks of winter, at least that’s what the groundhog says, that is fine with me. The weather has been quite nice here in Portlandia, kind of a mild winter actually. Pluto, oh Pluto, now that is not a planet anymore is getting redder and changing colors; I hope it’s not getting angry or sad to be a pseudo-planet ….and that is pretty much all I know from the outside world. I have been so busy with music lately I do not even know what day I’m living in, and all the sudden here we are, February 2010. It sounds kind of sci-fi. Can’t believe it’s been already a year since I got back here in PDX. Alright, time flies, yes.

We are really excited to play this next Thursday at one of our favorite places in Portland, The Woods. I am thrilled to play with Dolorean. I have been a huge fan of Al Jame’s band for a long time and I am honored that they wanted to play with us on our Record Release Show. Dolorean’s last album ‘You Can’t Win’ is one of my favorite records of all times and the new songs on the new record (lucky to have heard it!) are so elegant and cool I know everyone is going to have a great time with them. It should be a fun night. Also, we have a great guest: no other than my good friend, the wonderful Laura Gibson, who will sing with us some spanish words. It should be fun… and after that we just hit the road with our little spanish lullabies… eastern Oregon, then Washington then California! Please, be well.
